February Mix 13'

No real major albums this month but we still got some new singles from the likes of J. Cole, Drake, Asher Roth, and Chance the Rapper (who's been putting in work lately). Additionally several artist, such as Kris Kassanova, CyHi the Prince, KRNDN, and Dee-1, dropped some respectable projects. Nothing too amazing but still some new music to ride to. Enjoy!

Mixes: Second Half of 2012

Sorry for the long 6 months of inactivity. Now that I'm a college grad with more time on my hands than ever, it's time to get back to my hobby of sharing music with the world. 2012 was a great year! Here are the last 6 months of music!

April Mix 2012

Women + Weed + Weather = Cali (The Recipe)

What a month for singles. Kendrick Lamar, ASAP Rocky, Nas, G.O.O.D. Music, Wiz Khalifa (although that shit was weak), etc. Looks as though summer is filled with promising albums!

With work, school, and vegan/vegetarian tamales taking over my life, it has become harder and harder for me to even find time in the day to blog as much as I'd like too. There are even days when I find it hard to riffle through the surplus of music constantly coming out.  But Hip Hop is still my first love and these monthly mixes will live on!

Since 4/20 is Christmas to Stoners, I found this video appropriate.

Ya'll know the deal! DB&B!

March Mix 2012

March always tends to be an exceptional month for hip hop. Last year's March mix was probably my favorite mix of the entire year and this year it is following in the same path. It might just be that summer/spring feeling but regardless there's not a second through out the mix that I'll consider skipping.

Cream of the crop this time around are Miller's two joints, LRG's endorsed Add-2, and the diamond in the rough track/video by Cesar Luciano (who?), with Big Krit's 4EverNaDAy being another honorable mention. Download, Burn, and BUMP!

February Mix 2012

Better late than never I guess... Great mix and I wish I would've gone into logic and actualley mixed this one but who knew growing up would really result in a lifestyle that allowed for little free time. Regardless, this is a mix that will be played until I'm 6 feet deep. Download, Burn, and BUMP!

Best song of the month goes to... Brother Ali - I'll Be Around feat. Phonte & Stokley Williams.

January Mix 2012

I haven't mixed one of these playlist in Logic since July. Since it's a new year, I've decided to try it once again. Remember, the idea is you let the single mp3 file play through completely the first time around, forcing yourself to actually listen to every song thoroughly (instead of skipping after 10 seconds), and then download the Zip file with all the individual tracks. It's a little old school, but I feel this way is better for the listener and might actually decrease the amount of songs that unfortunately get slept on.

January it self was a pretty rough start for Hip Hop releases. With only really about 3 releases that I cared for, it was definitely hard to come up with a playlist this time around. So much for my notion of too much music coming out. This month actually felt like more of a shortage than a surplus; compared to previous months in which I've put together mixes. This is actually displayed in this mix since it's only 12 tracks long (shortest mix thus far). Regardless the mix is still great with its balance of both soothing, thought provoking melodies and upbeat, head nodding slappers.

Best song of the month goes to Chip Tha Ripper. As a matter of fact, so does best cover art.

December Mix 2011

Toast to a great year of music!

Leaving 2011 with bang! Hip Hop is alive and breathing well. The internet has done wonders for independent artist. No longer is radio and TV the main source for new music. Artists are able to succeed and strive through hard work, innovative marketing, and of course opportunity. It's no longer filthy rich white men in suites, who give two shits about the genre, deciding what music the masses are subject to. Although we have this freedom to stray away from the same 40 radio hits, there is still much work to be done before the music industry is truly an equal playing ground. But enough of my two cents, now on to December...

First off, this song has to be the hardest shit since "Niggaz in Paris".

"So the most you'll get from is cab money hahaaha"

With production from the mastermind behind "Black & Yellow", you know Cardo is bound to lace Phil Ade with a beat that knocks so hard that heads turn wherever you drive. M.O.B. was so 2000 & late... (no homo). Another random stand out, and which proves that Kendrick Lamar can hop on any track and make it classic certified, is "Rossi Wine (Free My Mind)".

"I'm out cheaaa!!"

Give this track a few spins and you'll be sippin' wine out of a red plastic cup in no time.

While the December mix is filled with independent artist making their way up the success ladder, several major labels had huge releases. Warner Bro's put out Common's much needed come back album, The Dreamer, The Believer, and Def Jam released The Roots' first concept album, Undun, which is argued to be one of their best pieces of work. Other notable artists found on this playlist are The Kid Daytona, Naledge, Danny Brown, El Prez and just about everyone else on here. 2011 was a great year for Hip Hop; can't wait to see what 2012 brings! (*fingers crossed for that Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole project*)

November Mix 2011

God damn this month had releases! I tried my best to keep the mix short but I even ended up leaving projects out because there was just too much music this November. I guess that's where I got this whole HipHopSurplus concept from though. Regardless, this month had some pretty outstanding music. Besides the mainstream artists such as Wale and Drake (I'm sure you can tell how I feel about his album by the picture above) releasing their sophomore efforts, other new commers such as Freddie Gibbs, Pac Div, & ASAP Rocky dropped exceptional pieces of work that were 100x's better than that of the radio established rappers.

The youngin' Chuuwee also dropped some classic material with his Watching the Throne project and I'll even admit that the comedian/actor, Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino), left me surprised with his solid CAMP album. Last but not least, Mac Miller made it into the hip hop history books by accomplishing a #1 album on Billboard with his Blue Slide Park release. Not to say that no rapper has landed #1 on Billboard before, but the 19 year old did this without a major record deal; the last artist/group to achieve this was the Dogg Pound back in '95. Independent, young enough to be charged with underage drinking, and white... Props!

October Mix 2011

There's been better mixes... Still has its gems though. Murs, People Under The Stairs, Statik Selektah, Nas (Unreleased), The Roots, etc. Happy Halloween!

Download October Mix11

Not a song that's on the mix, as you can tell its 1000 times better than anything to drop in the last 10 years, but just a throwback I thought was suitable for this time of year. Most definitely in my top 5 favorite albums of all time.

September Mix 2011

"Vwasssup J. Cole!!!" no big deal

With a bunch of dope releases this month, it's only fair I provide y'all with something to ride to. Cole World: The Sideline Story probably has to be my most anticipated album, ever, and I must say, classic! It's nice to see an artist you've followed since day one come out on top and transition into the mainstream successfully (with a few minor tweaks to his artistic integrity). Cole's debut is projected to sell 250K in the first week so if you still haven't, go out and cop yourself a copy of a runner up for 2011's album of the year. Other September releases include: Phonte, 9th Wonder, Evidence, Tiron & Ayomari, etc. Enjoy!

August Mix 2011

Nas and AZ at this year's Rock the Bells. "Life's a Bitch" I presume.

With school starting up again and my mom nagging me to paint the living room, I have failed y'all once again. I really liked the idea of actually mixing these end of the month playlists, but I couldn't even land two in a row. But on the bright side, now that I have some sort of schedule in my life, I know I'll gain some consistency when it comes to providing you all with dope music once again. This month's mix is not the best mix I've came up with, but far from the worst. Still a lot of dope releases in August. Enjoy!

July Mix 11

Its been a year since I started this blogging hobby and since I still haven't given it up, I decided to try a little something different this time around. It feels as though music fans today have short attention spans when it comes to giving new music a chance. People are constantly hungry for new jams and may only listen to 10 seconds of a song before clicking their mouse to move on to the next track. For this reason I had my business partner, Jimbo Slice, mix this end of the month playlist into a single track that is filled with smooth transitions and dope hip hop. If you have the time (a little over 40min), let this track play in its entirety and give every single song that I chose as July's "best of' a chance. If you really give these songs a full listen, then maybe you will see why these songs stuck out for me.

As for the July Mix... Another month full of heaters. July may be remembered for Kendrick Lamar's classic Section.80 album or even Lil B's attempt to shock the music industry with his sudden switch from songs filled with random ignorance, to an album filled with conscious driven material (not to mention his album was titled I'm Gay). But regardless whether it was new comers providing music that the average joe can relate his struggles to, or the legendary Wu-Tang Clan dropping a project that left no fan disappointed, this month was proof that hip hop continues to strive and head in the right direction.

June Mix

Sorry for the late post. My boy Sowko made feel bad for not hitting the deadline this month but here it is! So June was actually a pretty good month for hip hop. With a debut from G.O.O.D. Music's Big Sean and a compilation album from old school classic artist Pete Rock and Smiff-N-Wessun, this month was proof that hip hop is surviving. Look out for Dom Kennedy... He's bringing that true west coast G-rap summer feeling for damn sure! Download, Burn, and BUMP!!!

PS: Sorry Cole for throwing the leaks on the mix but damn we're feening that debut album... COLE WORLD: THE SIDELINE STORY. September 27th! Support good hip hop!

May Mix

R.I.P.

First of all, I'd just like to apologize for yet another slow month on posts. As I said before, these last several months have been hard to keep up with school and work, but fortunately summer break is here and I have more free time than ever. I hope I can make up for the inconsistent month with a solid mix.

May was over all a good month for hip hop music. Projects by MMG (Rick Ross, Wale, Pill, Meek Mill, Stalley), Elzhi, Chiddy Bang, and Skeme left hip hop addicts with a wide selection of music to make it through the month. With J. Cole putting out several new tracks to excite his fans for his summer debut and veterans like Killer Mike dropping truly exceptional albums, which left the listener ready to burn down city hall, May was filled with head nodding, yet insightful slappers. Download, Burn, and BUMP!!!

April Mix

R.I.P. Keith Edward Elam (July 17, 1961 - April 19, 2010)

I swear these mixes make my months go by faster. Didn't realize it was the end of the month already. Anyways, this month was not so big on releases and I had to dig a little deeper to put together a mellow, but solid mix. The April Mix is filled with (all but about 3 tracks) pretty laid back music to zone out to, so this month's mix is perfect to study for finals to. Which reminds me to apologize in advanced for yet another slow month of blogging. May is filled with final projects and exams so don't expect much out of me for the next few weeks. But then again summer time is right around the corner!

I know I’ve been slackin’ on posts this month, but this play list is a must. Don’t know what else to say but enjoy and have a great 420!

March Mix

Crazy month for releases. With enough projects to fill up the March Madness bracket, this month was truly a surplus of music; but in a semi-good way. On this mix you'll find tracks from both rookies and veterans. New music from 2011 freshmen, to legends that dropped classics in the 90's. Mac Miller, Big K.R.I.T., Pharaoh Monch, Snoop Dogg, etc... Enjoy!

I'm diggin' this one. Big Boi, J. Cole, Murs , Wiz, Snoop, Nas, Saigon, etc. Nothing else to say but enjoy!

Ps: Next month looks pretty heavy with releases so stay tuned.

January Mix

Not the best way to start off the year. Only a few solid releases this month and several shitty ones. While new comers such as School Boy Q and Smoke DZA continue to put out great music, old timers put out albums that left the fans disappointed (sorry Kweli). Still a decent monthly mix though.
