Must Have Music: Pharcyde Remixes

Since the whole Pharcyde catalogue is a must have if you consider your self a "hip hop head", then I'm going to go with some of their rare/unreleased remixes. The first remix is done by Jay Dee (RIP), and the second one is by rae & christian? Don't know who they are but they sure do a nice job making a remix just as dope as the original. You can find these two tracks, plus plenty more, off the Sold My Soul (Remix & Rarity Collection) compilation.

Throwback Thursday: Black Sheep - Without a Doubt

What a better way than to start off the weekend (well at least for me) with another classic! I can actually party this shit right here too! Off Black Sheep's second album Non-Fiction (1994). Bet you thought I was gana' go with The Choice is Yours huh?

September Mix

It's the end of the month again and you know what that means... This month was truly a surplus for hip hop so it was definitely hard picking just 120 minutes of jams. There were a lot of other songs I wanted to make the playlist, but I decided to try and not repeat any artists this month. A lot of new different artists so if you really like any particular songs on the mix, then i suggest you do your own research.

Good Friday: Kanye West – So Appalled f. Jay-Z, RZA, Pusha T, Swizz Beatz & CyHi Da Prynce

Another Friday, another track brought to you by G.O.O.D. Music. Seems as though Kanye is going for the Wu on his features. Who's next? Meth? Ghostface? That would be DOPE!

Must Have Music: Chip Tha Rippa - Dear Hip Hop feat. Naledge & 6th Sense - Prod. by Canei Beats

Just another track that pays homage to that classic ass shit! One of Cleveland's finest, accompanied by Naledge of Kidz in the Hall and 6th Sense. The beat alone makes you want to hit the beach on a sunday afternoon and watch the sun set... Off of Chip Tha Ripper's Mixtape, The Cleveland Show (2009).

John Legend and The Roots - Wake up! + I Can't Write Left Handed

... This track alone makes the album worth the 10 bucks! RnB needs more of this instead of just tracks about being the "milk man" who swoops in on your girl while you're gone. Where did good music go? Fuck it! If you're looking for brighter concepts sung over soulful melodies than quit being a cheap ass and go pick up a copy of Wake Up! Quit sleeping dumb asses!

Bonus: I Can't Write Left Handed performed live

Throwback Thursday: Pete Rock & CL Smooth - I'll Take You There

Its been a while since I've posted one of these, so I'll come back strong with this one! Might just be my favorite duo of the "Golden Age" of hip hop. You can find this track off of their second album The Main Ingredient (1994). What a great year...

Good Friday Update: Kanye West - Lord Lord Lord f. Mos Def, Swizz Beatz, Raekwon & Charlie Wilson

I know it's Monday but here it is incase you missed it. Another hit! (although it could've been better without Swizz Beatz' verse)

Cratediggin': Bobby Caldwell - What You Won't Do For Love

Just another song about the wonders of that 4 letter word. We've all been through it so don't front like you can't relate! This is actually where Pac got his chorus from on the last track I posted and it has also been sampled by the likes of Guru, Dj Jazzy Jeff, ect. This is Caldwell's best work in my opinion.

Bonus: My Flame (sample for Notorious BIG - Sky's The Limit (Feat. 112)), Open Your Eyes (sample for Common - The Light)

Must Have Music: 2pac - Do For Love

Instantly knew this song would get heavy rotation after hearing the chorus. Lyrically there too, as you all know, 2pac is the shit. Don't even know what album it's off since I just downloaded it off Limewire years ago. Anyways... enjoy some more vintage hip hop!

Must Have Music: Ed OG - Wishing (Like Minds Remix) ft Masta Ace

Today's must have track is "Wishing (Like Minds Remix)", performed by the two old school hip hop pioneers, Ed OG and Masta Ace. The track is off of Preemptive Hype Vol. 7, which I have no idea how i came across (but definitely glad I did). The original beat is nice but this remix hits the spot. The two emcees preach about Martin's dream and give the listener something actually positive to zone out to.

Bonus: Dancing Like A White Girl (Feat. Chester French & Pav Bundy) Something fun to balance their mellow beats and serious concepts.

Must Have Music: Blackstar - Hopelessly (Wally Sparks Mix feat. India.Arie)

This ain't off their one and only classic album! So be sure to not pass on this one. This track can be found on The Boondocks' second mixtape titled Hip Hop Dock-Trine 2 (The Saga Continues) [Thugnificent Edition]. Such a GREAT song!

Being that this track came from the classic television series, it's only fair I give that new Sergeant Guddah! This shit is hot son!

Nice With the Beats Too!

We all love him for his raw lyrics and flawless delivery, but the man is a great producer too! In this clip, J. Cole is finally interviewed on his production talents among other things (such as working with No ID and favorite beats). Give it some time and I'm sure he'll be praised just like Kanye. I just hope he doesn't try and pull no 808 & Heartbreaks shit.

Bishop Lamont - No Equal

Quite refreshing to hear some new good music. For those of you who don't know the man, he's an intellect thug from Inglewood. Originally on Dr. Dre's Aftermath label for 5 years up until about a year ago. His reasons for splitting were that his music was not being put out as he wished (his debut album kept getting pushed back and has yet to be released). Even if he's no longer part of Dre's team, you can still expect some good stuff from the guy, so check it out!

Cratediggin': Marvin Gaye -Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)

Another new segment for the Blog! Since hip hop consists highly of sampling old records, then what better way to educate you on some of hip hop's roots than by posting up old classics.

On today's "Cratediggin", I decide to hit you with none other than the legend himself, Marvin Gaye! What a better way to start off the new segment, based on classic music, than to chose an artist who pioneered soul music and will be forever remembered... This song, titled "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)", can be found on Marvin Gaye's What's Going On (1971) album.

J. Cole Set to Drop Second Mixtape!

Since Grown Simba has such an excess of great music, then why not drop another mixtape of the year! He's laggin' on his release date anyways so he should definitely do something to keep that flame on his name.

"you want change this that between the seats and yo' couch shit!"

Kanye West - Runaway ft. Pusha T

Another dope track dropped by none other than Yeezy! This was actually first performed Sunday in this years VMA's. He's also going to be on the cover of October's issue of XXL which comes out the 28th of this month (as you can see on the picture above).

PS: The album is now set to drop November 16, but don't be surprised if get pushed back AGAIN!

Professor 9th Wonder

Yes... Little Brother's x-producer is a college professor. In this recent video of Maestro Knows, 9th Wonder is followed around North Carolina's Duke University while he gives his input on hip hop and music in general. You also get to see the professor in action as he lectures his students on how to properly sample soul music!

Damn if only my school offered that class!

Must Have Music: Johnny Polygon - Price On Your Head

Originally heard when I was running over hookers in the G-ride. Playing Grand Theft Auto 4 of course! This dopeness could be found on the GTA 4: Liberty City Invasion soundtrack which is hosted by none other than DJ Green Lantern (dude who produced "Grown Simba"). I checked out Johnny Polygon's other stuff but he turned out kind of weird... Anyways, this track fits Grand Theft Auto perfectly!

Black Milk - Album of the Year

Detroit's producer/emcee Black Milk, dropped his third studio album today titled Album of the Year. I'll be honest and admit that I was a little more excited about this album... Don't get me wrong! It's still a solid piece of work and has that dope Detroit feel to it (plus Black Milk shits on the drums), but for some reason i just felt it was going to be better. It may not be the album of the year but at least The Source didn't give it a perfect 5 Mic's when it really didn't deserve it *cough* Bun B's Trill OG *cough*

Must Have Music: Prince Paul - Drama Queen ft. Truth Enola & Trugoy the Dove (De La Soul)

On today's "Must Have Music" I'm going with "Drama Queen" off of Prince Paul's (producer) sophomore album titled Politics of the Business (2003). This track features Truth Enola and Trugory the Dove (Aka Plug 2 of De la Soul). These two do a great job in expressing what it's like having a girl when your first true love is music. Prince Paul is clutch on the beat as well. Funkin' Drama Queens!!!

Bonus My Life ft Tre, Fatlip (Pharcyde) & Black Ice Get lifted to this one!

New Atmosphere Album! (To All My Friends, Blood Makes The Blade Holy)

One of my favorite underground duos dropped an album last tuesday titled To All My Friends, Blood Makes The Blade Holy. The whole time I thought it was just a tour called "To All My Friends" but i guess not. Either way it's a solid album with that good ol' atmos feel. You won't be able to find the album in stores since it is only sold through Itunes or other websites that sell MP3's.

Here's a little taste of what To All My Friends, Blood Makes The Blade Holy sounds like... Download The Best Day

Must Have Music: Wyclef Jean - Street Jeapordy

Ohh yah... This one brings me back to my skater days. Originally spotted back in 5th grade on the Daewon Song Vs Rodney Mullen Vol. 1 skate video. One of Wyclefs best tracks off of The Carnival (1997). Know your Hip Hop son!!!!

Bonus: Guantanamera & Gone Till November (Some more classics off the album)

Kanye West - Good Friday f. Common, Pusha T, KiD CuDi, Big Sean & Charlie Wilson

I know it's saturday morning but damn I had a G.O.O.D. friday! (see what i did there) So what better way to end the night off than with Kanye's 3rd installment of "Good Fridays". This week he's got Common, Pusha T, KiD CuDi, Big Sean & Charlie Wilson featured on the track (nice...). This has got to be my favorite track so far!

Wonder who produced this one? Any guesses?

John Legend and The Roots - Little Ghetto Boy (Video)

Fuck yah this shit is dope! If you haven't heard the great news yet, The Roots + John Legend are dropping album together, titled Wake Up!, that is dropping September 21 so mark your calendar. Here's their new video which shows these talented artists recording the track.

Naledge - TwentySomething (Mixtape)

What a great day for new releases! Naledge, rapper from Kidz in the Hall, drops this nice piece of work on his birthday (hence the name of the mixtape). Another sick guest appearance line up! Murs, Phil Ade, Big Pooh, Skyzoo, Freddie Gibbs!!! You can tell Naledge is keeping up with current dope hip hop.

Joell Ortiz - Farwell Summer EP

Slaughter House's microphone ripper put out a Free EP today. Definitely a talented emcee who deserves your download + the production and features are great so if Joell himself doesn't convince you then they will.

Lupe's Lazers May Not Be Coming Out!?!?

So according to a recent interview with Complex Mag, Lupe Fiasco has been having problems with his label for his choice in music style (hmm... sounds like Rhymefest's issue with Alido Records). Since their current problems and disagreements, they have yet to set a release date for his 3rd album Lazers. Lupe Fiasco claims that, "The situation with me and my record company has gotten to the point where it's just like... we're really at our final straws. People could say it's me, that 'Lupe doesn't want to make popular music' or 'the label has to have records they can sell and Lupe is not giving them the records they want to sell' and XYZ...". Nothing is set in stone though. Check out HipHopDx for the full article.

Must Have Music: Wiz Khalifa - Pittsburgh Sound

I know most of y'all have been dick riding Wiz ever since they decided to market him as a pot head. But this dude used to be way better! Well atleast in this track. This sounds nothing like Kush & Orange Juice. In my opinion, he should've kept his ill flow, well atleast from a hip hop perspective. Anyways this is off his Show and Prove mixtape that came out in 06'! Weird how he didn't become one of XXL's freshmen until they decided to take his image in a whole nother direction.

Bonus: Sometimes (featuring Kelly Porter) (Also off of Show and Prove)

Freddie Gibbs - Oil Money (Video)

I fucks wit' em! New video for his "Oil Money" track off his Str8 Killa EP featuring Chuck Inglish (of the Cool Kids), Chip Tha Rippa, Bun B, and Dan Auerbach (of The Black Keys) on the hook. Gibbs is most definitely one of the better freshman (XXL).

Bonus: Freddie Gibbs - In My Hood (Some OG is ass shit right here!)

Kanye West Apology

I love this guy's music, but damn he does some weird shit! In recent Hip Hop news: Kanye West writes a song for Taylor Swift as an apology for his dick move last year at the MTV music video awards.

"I wrote a song for Taylor Swift that's so beautiful and I want her to Have it. If she won't take it then i'll perform it for her," wrote West via his Twitter account (@Kanyewest).

Dear Kanye,

You don't need to write a country song for taylor swift! Just stop getting drunk and being an asshole in public!!! Please just stick to making your own music (hip hop, not that 808 bullshit). Oh yah and you're a gay fish!

Sincerely,
Otis

Hip Hop You Need to Have: Stimulus - So High

This is going to be a another new segment for the blog just like "Throwback Thursday" or the mixes at the end of the month. In these posts I'll select songs from my Itunes (17,000 songs and running) that i believe are timeless and deserve to be heard by everyone. Lets face it, hip hop (currently) is a surplus and not enough dope shit comes out to leave you with posts everyday. So in that case, i'll share some of my favorite tracks with y'all, regardless of when they came out.

In today's "Hip Hop You Need to Have" (i'll come up with a more clever name for it later), I decided to go with Stimulus - So High. Although this is the only track I've ever heard from him, this has got to be one of the best weed songs in my ipod. Stimulus comes hard intellectually on this one! Wish he would've pursued hip hop though.

J. Cole - Villematic

Just another Ville track from the dopest rapper out! This time he decides to shit over Kanye's last single, Devin In A New Dress. Don't think Yeezy's too happy that someone outdid him on his own track. And if this track wasn't enough to get your week started, J. Cole also announced another mixtape is on the way! Straight from his own words off his own blog Dreamvillain.blogspot.com.

August Mix

So it has been a pretty slow month for me with Hip Hop. With school starting up again and non-stop binge drinking it's hard to keep up with the new stuff. Also, no real worthy albums dropped this month so my choices were pretty limited. Anyways the August Mix is still worth the download and in addition I added a track that was suppose to be on Doggy Style (Snoop wasn't able to clear the sample) but i didn't hear about it until Rock the Bells. Enjoy!

Download August Mix

Big Sean - Finally Famous Vol. 3: BIG

Another one of 2010's freshman (XXL) dropping another mixtape. Not too crazy about this guy but everyone seems to think he's legit and he is signed onto G.O.O.D. Music (Kanye's on his dick). I guess I just might be getting too old for this new school of rap. Anyways i'll let you be the judge.

Track List

01 Final Hour (prod. Don Cannon and Nick Kage)
02 Meant To Be (prod. DJ Spinz)
03 What U Doin? (Bull$#!@ing) (prod. The Olympicks)
04 Money & Sex f. Bun B (prod. No I.D.)
05 Five Bucks (5 On It) f. Chip Tha Rippers & Curren$y
06 High Rise (prod. Don Cannon)
07 Crazy (prod. The Olympicks)
08 Home Town (prod. Eliseo of Treal)
09 Supa Dupa Lemonade
