May Mix

R.I.P.

First of all, I'd just like to apologize for yet another slow month on posts. As I said before, these last several months have been hard to keep up with school and work, but fortunately summer break is here and I have more free time than ever. I hope I can make up for the inconsistent month with a solid mix.

May was over all a good month for hip hop music. Projects by MMG (Rick Ross, Wale, Pill, Meek Mill, Stalley), Elzhi, Chiddy Bang, and Skeme left hip hop addicts with a wide selection of music to make it through the month. With J. Cole putting out several new tracks to excite his fans for his summer debut and veterans like Killer Mike dropping truly exceptional albums, which left the listener ready to burn down city hall, May was filled with head nodding, yet insightful slappers. Download, Burn, and BUMP!!!

Skeme - The Statement (Mixtape)

Yet another solid G to add to the west coast/Los Angeles roster. His first mixtape made it onto last year's October Mix and this new project will most definitely find it's way onto May Mix. Keep up the good work bruh!

Rock The Bells 2011 Line-Up

I'm pretty sure any true hip hop fan soiled their pants when they first heard this amazing news. This line-up may just be the best Rock The Bells line-up up to date. With hip hop legends such as Mobb Deep, Cypress Hill, Raekwon/Ghostface, GZA, Nas, Black Moon, Lauren Hill, etc playing their debut classics, this festival will bring old timers nostalgia and remind them of the good old days when hip hop was golden. Not to mention a wise selection of newer artists who have already left their mark in hip hop such as Blu, Freddie Gibbs, Big K.R.I.T., and Currensy. This years Rock The Bells will be one to remember.

Kendrick Lamar - Hiii Power (Video)

The revolution will be televised!!! Section .80 should see day light this summer and be within the top 5 projects of the year. Not to mention his project with J. Cole is going to be legendary...

Zion I - Infatuation (video)

Always love it when songs I choose for the monthly mixes get the visual treatment. This one landed on November's mix and off Zion I's sixth album, Atomic Clock (2010).

Pac Div - Fallin' (Video)

Some new visuals off Pac Div's last project, Mania!. This track definitely gives off that classic hip hop vibe. Can't wait for their Grown Kid Syndrome album.

Throwback Thursday: Grand Puba - Who Makes the Loot

Grand Puba is not only part of one the best golden era hip hop groups of all time (Brand Nubian), but also an emcee with a particular style and voice like none other. This is the closing track off Puba's debut album, Reel to Reel (1992). Classic!

You Can't Be Serious: Fuck Fox News

I'm sure you've all heard the bull shit Fox news reporters have been giving Obama for inviting Common to the White House for a poetry slam. These right wing assholes claim that Common is a controversial rapper and promotes cop killing when really he's like the ideal conscious rapper. Anyways, John Stuart decides to take up the issue in The Daily Show and ridicules the conservative network. If you agree that Fox News are wrong to accuse Common, then you'll enjoy these next few clips.

Random Singles May

So instead of wasting my time and telling you I don't know shit about any of these next several artist (although some singles do have rappers I'm familiar with on them), I'll just post up the preview and download link for you to decide which ones you want. These are selected few tracks to come out this month (out of who knows how many songs released) that I felt where worth a second listen. Unless a certain new artist stands out or the song just straight up deserves its own post, then I'll continue this grouping of randoms for posts like this one. I'll come up with a better name for thees posts later since it's finals week and I'm already drained from all the last minute studying.

Moe Dirdee & Jamall Bufford - We Know

Celeb Forever - Alive ft. Currensy

Tone Spliff - Most Recognized f. Sean Price, Irealz & Baby Blak

Maffew Ragazino - Black Sheep

Luke Christopher - The Social Network (Video)

I don't much about the rapper but I'm really diggin' these lyrics and the vibe given off. So far I've heard 3 songs from the rapper and already a fan. Low budget video but the future may be looking bright for this guy.

eLZhi - ELmatic (Mixtape)

Normally I view these Illmatic tributes as disrespectful (for trying to remake a flawless classic), but I actually enjoyed this one. Slum Village member, Elzhi does a solid job in remaking Nas' 1994 debut. The cool thing about the project is the beats are all re-done by Will Sessions, a group of producers who play live instruments. Check the "Making of Elmatic" to see what I mean.

Pusha T - Open Your Eyes (Video)

Some new visuals off Pusha T's last project, Fear of God. The one song off the album I actually chose to throw on my "March Mix". Nice!

Skyzoo - The Definitive Prayer (video) & Written in the Drums

Just a few new singles from the Brooklyn representative, Skyzoo. His next project is titled The Great Debater and set to drop June 7th. If you haven't heard Skyzoo's last album, The Salvation (2009), I suggest you check it out.

Ohh and I'm saving "The Definitive Player" for the May Mix. Track is too sick.
