March Mix

Crazy month for releases. With enough projects to fill up the March Madness bracket, this month was truly a surplus of music; but in a semi-good way. On this mix you'll find tracks from both rookies and veterans. New music from 2011 freshmen, to legends that dropped classics in the 90's. Mac Miller, Big K.R.I.T., Pharaoh Monch, Snoop Dogg, etc... Enjoy!

David Dallas - Caught In A Daze ft. Freddie Gibbs

Don't know who this David Dallas kid is, but you know I gotta' show Gangsta Gibbs some love. Not surprised he did a track with this random artist, Gibbs has been putting in work like no other these last several months. In related news: Freddie Gibbs recently vowed that he would not change up his style to appeal to the masses. He pretty much gave any labels a heads up that he's making hip hop the way it's intended to be made.

Big K.R.I.T. - Return of 4Eva (Mixtape)

After a few delays, Big K.R.I.T.'s Return of 4Eva has finally arrived. Like Kendrick Lamar, country boy K.R.I.T. made the 2011 freshman list due to his deep and inspiring lyrics. Like J. Cole, the up and coming artist produces his own beats, which shows the emcee/producer has twice the talent than most of these clowns out today. Good luck K.R.I.T.! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Throwback Thursday: Guru - Lifesaver

I know it's friday but one day i'll start posting these on time. This one is too good to pass up on anyways. This old school joint is by the legendary, deceased Gangstarr member, Guru. This classic was one of the many "jazzmatazz" (Hip Hop + Jazz) tracks that Guru did back in his successful career. This song particularly, is found on his second session, Jazzmatazz Vol 2. - The New Reality (1995). Rest in peace Keith Edward Elam (July 17, 1961 - April 19, 2010).

Must Have Music: MF Doom - Kon Karne & Potholderz

Doom has an acquired taste. Many dislike the sounds he puts out, but if you really sit back and give his music a chance (maybe even more than a few listens), then you might figure out what everyone was raving about back when he was relevant. He's one of those weirdo underground artists who produces abstract music who hipsters and potheads tend to love. Although strange and unlike the standard hip hop sound, the mask wearing "villain" is still dope enough to gain recognition from hip hop heads who give all sounds a chance. Both these tracks are off his second album, MM... Food (2007). Have fun trying to make sense out of his lyrics.

Kooley High - Somethin' Outta Nothin ft. Median (Video)

Kooley High is one ill ass underground crew. Not to mention their videos are pretty dam awesome. In this song/video, they are accompanied by Hall of Justice member, Median. The song can be found on Kooley High's Eastern Standard Time LP.

Kendrick Lamar - Beyonce & LMAO

Another few tracks I found flipping through youtube videos. These two gems are some of K Dot's older music from before the Kendrick Lamar EP and O(verly) D(edicated). Kendrick goes in on old school sounding beats while he shows off his lyrical talents and fantasizes what his life would be like if Beyonce was his dame. Give it up for this year's best Freshman.

J. Cole - The Good Son Pt 1

J. Cole tells a story similar to Ricky's from Boyz N the Hood. I guess this track was recoded during the "Warm-Up" sessions but never came out until recently. Short, but still compelling. Supposably the girl up top is Cole's college sweetheart. Wonder if that relationship is still going.

Panty Droppers: M1 - Love You Can't Borrow ft. Q-Tip

Great song by half of Dead Prez and featuring one third of A Tribe Called Quest. While the song may not sound too intimate, it's still a soothing laid back track that you and your better half can vibe to. Off the revolutionist musician's solo album, Confidential 2006.

Pusha T - Fear of God (Mixtape)

Pusha T, half of Clipse, dropped the long awaited Fear of God Mixtape today. Not sure what all the hype is over this mixtape, but I only scanned through the tracks before posting it up. I'm sure the G.O.O.D. Music rep did a solid job.

Mos Def - Life is Good

Just a random track I ran into roaming through youtube videos the other day. Feel good music by the Boogie Man.

Also, he recently performed a new song titled "World Premier".

XXL Freshmen Cyphers

It would've been nice if the past freshman classes got the same promotional treatment as this class. Although I don't fully agree with the list this year, here's all the interviews/cypher's that have came out so far.

Only one's worthy of looking into are Kendrick, Big K.R.I.T., Cyhi, Mac Miller, and Yelawolf

Mobb Deep - Love Ya'll More (prod. Alchemist)

Prodigy was just released from jail and he's already back on his grind. Sweet! A new Mobb Deep album would be a blessing. Let's just hope 50 doesn't step in again.

XV - Awesome (Remix) ft. Pusha T

With Pusha T's highly anticipated mixtape dropping next week, a remix to an XV classic is just right. Great look for Wichita's finest.

Ab-Soul - Picture That (Video)

I'm a fan of Black Hippy's Ab-Soul, but the video is what makes this post worthy. Coachella looks like a pretty insane music festival. I might just have to roll next year.

So many drugs consumed...

B.O.B - Dr. Aden (Video)

I threw this song on the December Mix and now it finally got the visual treatment. B.o.B. raps about the tragic dumping conspiracy theories on this one. Off of his most recent mixtape, No Genre.

Must Have Music: Heltah Skeltah - Therapy

Boot Camp Click affiliates, Rock and Sean Price, graced us with this track back in 96. The song is basically Sean Price counseling Rock over a nice bag of sess. Beat is equally as dope as the concept and gives off the perfect vibe to just sit back, relax, and zone out to. Off of their debut release, Nocturnal (1996), which is a classic itself.

The actual CDQ version is a little different (Better)

Mac Miller - Best Day Ever (Mixtape)

Fuck it... I'll admit it. The loppy looking white dude makes solid music. Mac Miller just dropped Best Day Ever a few days back giving him a head start on the rest of the freshmen. Good luck Mac.

Dom Kennedy - The Original Dom Kennedy

Dom's just another thug on the west coast roster. He dropped this free project a few days back without notice. <-- Gansta'. He's one of the up and coming artist who got gipped out of the freshman list. A dope thing about this project (besides the fact it's straight hood) is that each individual track has it's own artwork.

Throwback Thursday: The Roots - Proceed

Damn the Roots have come a long way. Do You Want More?!!!??! (1995) will go down in history as one of the best albums of all time; regardless of genre. "Proceed" is the first record off Do You Want More?!!!??! and I must say, a flawless introduction to a classic album. Make sure to watch the second half of the video and see how there used to be two emcees in the Roots. What ever happened to Malik B?

Rapper Big Pooh - FatBoyFresh Vol. 1: For Members Only (Mixtape)

On the topic of Little Brother, Rapper Big Pooh is dropping an EP titled, FatBoyFresh Vol. 1: For Members Only (April 5th). In order to promote this project, Pooh gives a taste of what to expect by putting out this free project. The mixTAPE is just one track through so you can't necessarily skip tracks. But the whole project slaps, so there's no need to touch that skip button. HHS certified!
