Throwback Thursday: Digable Plannets - Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like That)

For this week's throwback I've decided to go with the east coast jazz/funk trio. Digable Planets is most definitely one of my favorite old school groups and if their Vinyl wasn't so rare and priced at $300!!!! then maybe I would have this album on my wall. This track is actually from their 1993 debut, Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space) which I highly suggest anyone to buy a copy if they don't own one (I might even possibly slap someone for just merely downloading it). Track 1-14 are straight GOLD!

Throwback Thursday: AZ - Mo Money, Mo

"Life'a a bitch and then you die! That's why we get high, cause' ya neva' know when you gana go!!!" Obviously this is the chorus for "Life's a Bitch" but you can't help to think about that song every time Nas and AZ are mentioned together. "Mo Money, Mo Murder (Homicide)" is my personal favorite of AZ's debut, Doe or Die (1995), and just another instance in which the two legendary emcees produce gold. Not to mention the sample is just flawless.

Throwback Thursday: Grand Puba - Who Makes the Loot

Grand Puba is not only part of one the best golden era hip hop groups of all time (Brand Nubian), but also an emcee with a particular style and voice like none other. This is the closing track off Puba's debut album, Reel to Reel (1992). Classic!

Throwback Thursday - Special Ed, Buckshot, & Masta Ace - Crooklyn Dodgers

This is actually the first of three "Crooklyn Dodgers" songs ever made. The original first three up to bat were Special Ed, Buckshot, and Masta Ace; all Brooklyn representatives. I'll leave the second one for another thursday, for it is another classic. Off the 1994 "Crooklyn" soundtrack.

Throwback Thursday: Guru - Lifesaver

I know it's friday but one day i'll start posting these on time. This one is too good to pass up on anyways. This old school joint is by the legendary, deceased Gangstarr member, Guru. This classic was one of the many "jazzmatazz" (Hip Hop + Jazz) tracks that Guru did back in his successful career. This song particularly, is found on his second session, Jazzmatazz Vol 2. - The New Reality (1995). Rest in peace Keith Edward Elam (July 17, 1961 - April 19, 2010).

Throwback Thursday: The Roots - Proceed

Damn the Roots have come a long way. Do You Want More?!!!??! (1995) will go down in history as one of the best albums of all time; regardless of genre. "Proceed" is the first record off Do You Want More?!!!??! and I must say, a flawless introduction to a classic album. Make sure to watch the second half of the video and see how there used to be two emcees in the Roots. What ever happened to Malik B?

Throwback Thursday: Lord Finesse - Hip 2 Da Game

Hip Hop was the best when I was first discovering all the classic stuff out there. Now i spend all day searching through tons of garbage until I find something worthy of a second listen. And for that reason, Throwback Thursdays are here to stay!

Lord Finesse (of D.I.T.C.) is yet another underground emcee from Brooklyn NY. Don't know what else to say about the hip hop pioneer, so i'll just let the music speak for itself.

Throwback Thrusday: Mos Def -Body Rock ft Q-Tip & Tash

This that classic old hip hop sound that only real hip hop heads love. This track is originaly off of the Rawkus Records' compilation, titled Lyricsist Lounge Vol. 1 (2002). Woah... 2002? I guess hip hop has changed that much where something that's not from the golden era sounds old school.

Throwback Thursday: Pete Rock & CL Smooth - I'll Take You There

Its been a while since I've posted one of these, so I'll come back strong with this one! Might just be my favorite duo of the "Golden Age" of hip hop. You can find this track off of their second album The Main Ingredient (1994). What a great year...
